S1E3 - Tuesday Topics with Paul Edwards: Ethical Issues during the Pandemic

Originally aired April 14, 2020

September 13, 2020

There are lots of legal and ethical issues that concern people who are blind that have come to the fore during the corona emergency. On Tuesday Topics this week we explore some of these. State guidelines exist that propose ways of choosing who will live and who will die if there aren't enough ventilators or other resources. Some of these have people with disabilities placed lower than others. What do we think of this and what should we do about it? Children who are blind are being home schooled on platforms that are not accessible and some states have essentially sought to limit the Civil Rights protections that guarantee full inclusion for kids who are blind. What do we think and what should we do? Lots of the information that is shown on tv screens during the emergency is not accessible. Because it is not designated as "emergency information" stations appear to be able to show such information without any regard for whether it discriminates against people who are blind or have low vision. What can we do about it? Your opinion is a valuable resource! Share it!

S1E1 - Tuesday Topics with Paul Edwards: Covid 19 and Blindness

Originally aired March 31, 2020 on ACB Radio

September 13, 2020

Hi, I'm Paul Edwards! For those of you who have been ACB Radio aficionados for many years, there will be a vague memory of an old and venerable show called "Tuesday Topics" which I hosted every week for a couple of years a long time ago. Well, Tuesday Topics is back and I hope many of you who used to join us will be back again! For those of you who are new to the show, here is what it's all about. Each week we choose a single topic and spend an hour talking about it. I get us started with an overview and often feature a guest or two who receive a special interview. Then we open it up for debate and end with a kind of summary of where we have arrived.

It worked well several years ago and I think it will work well again! Obviously, the first show is about our experience with the virus. However, we want to focus on how blind people are equipped to cope with the pandemic. What advantages do we as blind people have dealing with the virus? What disadvantages operate for us? What could make coping easier? What are we most concerned about from the perspective of people who are blind?

These are just some of the questions that we will explore when Tuesday Topics once again takes to the net.
